Tenerife Packing List: What to Pack for One Week
Pack for one week in Tenerife with the right mix of beach clothes, Teide layers, hiking shoes, sun protection and winter or family extras.
The best Tenerife packing list is built around one fact: you may experience beach weather, cool evenings, wet forest and high-altitude mountain conditions in the same week.
Do not pack for only the hotel forecast.
For a normal seven-day trip, keep the luggage light but include enough layers to handle Teide and the north.
Core clothing for one week
Pack:
- lightweight tops;
- shorts;
- comfortable trousers;
- underwear and socks;
- one warmer layer;
- one light jacket;
- swimwear;
- sleepwear;
- comfortable walking clothes.
You do not need seven completely different outfits.
Tenerife is casual in most resort and daytime settings.
Beach and pool
Bring:
- swimwear;
- sun protection;
- sunglasses;
- hat or cap;
- sandals or flip-flops;
- lightweight cover-up;
- reusable water bottle.
Many hotels provide towels, so check before filling your luggage with bulky beach towels.
Teide layers
Teide National Park is the part of the packing list most first-time visitors underestimate.
Bring:
- closed shoes;
- long trousers or a warm lower layer when conditions require;
- fleece or insulated mid-layer;
- wind-resistant outer layer;
- sun protection.
For high-altitude controlled hiking routes, Tenerife ON may specify required equipment.
Follow the current official route requirements rather than this general packing list.
Hiking shoes
If you plan real hiking, bring footwear with grip.
Trail shoes are enough for many routes.
Hiking boots may be useful for:
- rough ground;
- longer mountain days;
- routes where ankle support matters.
Do not plan a demanding volcanic trail in smooth fashion trainers.
For route planning, see hiking in Tenerife.
Anaga and the north
For Anaga and north-coast days, add:
- light waterproof shell;
- shoes that can handle wet ground;
- thin layer for cooler conditions.
The north is greener because it receives more moisture.
That is exactly why beach-only packing can fail.
Winter packing
For a winter trip, add:
- warmer evening layer;
- light jacket;
- proper Teide layers;
- long trousers.
You may still spend the day in swimwear in the south.
The extra clothing is for evenings, northern days and altitude.
See Tenerife in winter.
Summer packing
Summer requires:
- stronger sun discipline;
- breathable clothes;
- hat;
- enough water capacity;
- light hiking clothing.
Do not remove the warm Teide layer just because the coast is hot.
Altitude remains a different environment.
Sun protection
Tenerife's latitude and altitude make sun protection important.
Bring:
- high-SPF sunscreen;
- sunglasses;
- hat;
- lip protection if useful.
Reapply after swimming and during long outdoor days.
A cloudy mountain or Anaga day can still expose you to UV.
Water activities
For snorkelling, diving or boat trips:
- secure swimwear;
- quick-dry clothes;
- light layer for the boat;
- waterproof phone pouch if useful;
- motion-sickness medication if appropriate for you.
Specialist snorkelling and diving equipment is usually easier to rent unless you have your own preferred mask or dive computer.
See snorkelling Tenerife and diving Tenerife.
Documents
Carry:
- passport or accepted travel document;
- driving licence if renting a car;
- insurance details;
- booking confirmations;
- any trail permits or reservations;
- payment cards.
Keep digital copies of important documents where appropriate.
If a controlled trail requires identification, follow the exact official instructions.
Driving items
If you rent a car, useful items include:
- phone mount;
- charging cable;
- offline maps;
- sunglasses;
- water.
Do not pack driving equipment that the rental company is legally required to provide with the vehicle.
Check the car before leaving the lot.
Electronics
For most travellers:
- phone;
- charger;
- power bank;
- camera if you genuinely use one;
- headphones.
Spain uses standard European plug types.
UK travellers may need a plug adapter.
Check your own device voltage and charger compatibility.
Medication and health items
Bring enough regular medication for the trip plus a reasonable buffer.
Useful additions can include:
- basic pain relief;
- blister care for hikers;
- seasickness medication for boat trips;
- any personal allergy medication.
Do not rely on finding a specific brand immediately after arrival.
Family extras
Families may need:
- child sun protection;
- familiar snacks for travel days;
- swim aids if normally used;
- compact entertainment for restaurants/transfers;
- child-seat plan for rental or transfer.
Do not carry unnecessary bulky baby equipment before checking what the accommodation provides.
One-bag packing strategy
A simple seven-day packing method:
- three or four daytime tops;
- two pairs of shorts;
- one or two trousers;
- one beach outfit;
- one warmer mountain outfit;
- one light waterproof;
- two shoe types;
- wash/reuse.
This keeps luggage manageable for split stays and rental-car changes.
What not to overpack
You probably do not need:
- formal evening clothes for every night;
- heavy winter coat unless conditions specifically require it;
- multiple beach towels;
- excessive hiking equipment for one short walk;
- full snorkel set if doing one guided trip.
Pack for the itinerary you actually built.
Final pre-departure check
Before closing the suitcase, ask:
- Can I handle a beach day?
- Can I handle Teide?
- Can I handle rain in Anaga?
- Do I have proper walking shoes?
- Do I have all documents?
- Do I know which airport I am using?
If yes, you are prepared for most first-time Tenerife weeks.
For climate context, read Tenerife weather. For the actual trip structure, return to the one-week itinerary.
